“Musella Vigne Nuove Valpolicella Superiore 2009 (Italy)

SCORE: 90 PRICE: $15.95

One of the best reasonably priced Valpolicellas I’ve tasted in a long time, this medium-bodied red combines suggestions of cherry and earth with a soft, supple texture. Great for grilled pork.”

Toronto Star.com

“Musella Vigne Nuove 2009 Valpolicella Superiore $15.95 (Italy)

A surprise to those who think of Valpolicella as weakkneed. Forward black cherry, vanilla and cedar aromas and flavours, with black tea spice and plum playing on the finish.

LCBO #205757 Food suggestion: Beef stroganoff. Rating: 90″

Also, Natalie MacLean, the largest electronic newsletter called it the best value red wine. See the link at:

Very particular vintage, the Springtime and the beginning of summer were quite cold and the grapes maturation was delayed till July, when in a couple of weeks there were very high temperatures, almost a record. But after this, the season followed up with temperatures and humidity really lower than usual and this let the grapes develop a thicker skin and great acidities. This is the reason why, the several rains during the harvest didn’t compromise too much the general quality. Medium Vintage.

- Winemaking technique

Maceration and fermentation on the skin for 12-15 days on a 20 -26° C temperature. Periodic pumping over, malolactic fermentation, transfer into 225 liters to 500 litrers barrels of various origins and essence

- Harvest: from the end of August until the middle of September.

- Yield per plant: 1 kg

- Vintage climate

The winter was extremely warm, the development of blooms started already in March, few rainfalls and hot temperature till June, when the rain started. At the end of month we had a terrible hail storm and we lost the 40% of grapes, but we had the time to clean up and work a lot in the vineyards, so the many rainfalls of July and August didn’t compromise the grapes. From end of August till the finish of the harvest in October we had a nice weather and the result is a small (in quantity), but great (in quality) Musella vintage.

- Winemaking technique

The healthiest, ripest bunches of picked grapes undergo a unique drying process (Appassimento) that take place, on cases in a well naturally ventilated loft.
